Julia Brochey (Bro-shay) is a singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist whose jazzy gypsy sound is derived from her cross-country travels.
Julia was a born writer, dictating poetry before she could use a pen; she was also a natural singer and performer. Though her mother was a pianist and her father a guitarist, Julia didn't begin playing guitar or writing music until 2003 after she had completed a degree in Journalism. From 2003-2005, Julia toiled away finishing a master's degree in education while composing music. In fall of 2005, Julia began playing with a few of Colorado's top musicians. Using Julia's songs, Julia and the Unexpecteds was born. The band quickly became well known for its ever-dynamic and unusual sound that has been described as flirty, smart, candid, and commanding.
In November 2006, Julia and the Unexpecteds completed the debut CD "All I Want". Shortly after, they began recording the second CD, but Julia became distracted by a very unexpected musical meandering. The story goes: Julia "was in her friend's backyard one afternoon watching bugs swirl around in the sun when a song about quantum physics jumped to mind." She recorded it. Following the recording of that song "Quantum Physics 101, " several other - nearly improvisational - solo songs were recorded. When finished, Julia realized she had written a concept CD that she now calls "a coffee table drama." The CD/book is sold as a bootleg, but Julia continues to work on a refined version. That project inspired more solo performances, though occasionally Julia performs with the Unexpecteds.
If that isn't enough to keep Julia busy, she is now a cowriter and singer in the band Ode to tHe Marionette. This is a project that she is most passionate about as "it stretches and challenges writer and listener." Ode to tHe Marionette is orchestral, jazzy, gypsy, theatrical, dark, and inspiring. The band has completed a debut CD, and is working on another.
